Aarkkariyam – yours forever, secret

  1. Aarkkariyam is a 2021 Malayalam movie directed by Sanu John Varghese that talks about a confession of a murder that will haunt another person for his lifetime.
  2. Roy (Sharafudheen) and Sherley (Parvathy Thiruvothu) are going from Mumbai to Kerala during the summer vacation time to live with Sherley’s father Itty (Biju Menon). They are also worried about meeting their daughter who is in a convent and is unable to travel to due to COVID-19 lockdown. Due to the lockdown, Roy’s business gets halted and he is pressurized by his partner to return the money. Itty decides to sell his house and solve Roy’s problem as well as to buy an apartment for his future. But Itty reveals a secret to Roy about a body that has been buried near the kitchen. The body is of Sherley’s ex-husband Augustine, a guy whose irresponsible nature lead to Itty killing him. Augustine went missing for others and later another body was found which was vaguely identified by Sherley and Augustine’s mother as his body and thus the case got solved. Now as the house is getting sold, Itty wants Roy’s help to dispose of the remainings without Sherley knowing anything. One day as Sherley is out to bring her daughter from the convent, Roy and Itty successfully burn the remains. A few days later, they shift to the new apartment. Itty’s memory loss problem starts and Roy is in the fear of carrying the secret forever alone.
  3. The movie is kind of slow from the start where the real story starts from the second half itself. It is the new trend in Malayalam cinema to stretch some scenes and explain them with such deep intensity which makes it beautiful but sometimes the story does not reach that level.
  4. The acting by the cast was really good and the location too. The story was able to bring back the memories that every child creates when he/she goes to Kerala during summer vacations. Plucking and eating mangoes, pears, jackfruits and taking bath in the river and many more.
  5. The reason for killing can sometimes be justified in many situations. If you see someone molesting someone, especially a child, a mentally unstable child, then your anger reaches a level where you will try to hit the molester in a fit of rage which can make you a criminal.
  6. Parents, mostly single ones when they reach their age are taken care of by their children, by the old age homes or by a home nurse. Some even sell their property to live a quiet and simple life elsewhere. An old person instead of creating new memories should be allowed to relive the memories already created.
  7. We all have secrets that surely will go into the graves with us, secrets that better remain as it is for the goodwill of many. Some lies are better than the truth if the ultimate result is positive. As humans are not perfect, every truth is also not.
  8. The movie has also focused on the lockdown amid the COVID-19. The distances that needed to be created with close relationships for a safe future. Lockdowns led to somewhat war-like situations where many lost lives, some jobs and some hopes.
  9. A critically acclaimed movie that was an OTT release.
  10. A one time watch and I say it’s WARM.
