King Richard – washroom break’s’ Venus

  1. King Richard is a 2021 English movie directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green that talks about Richard Williams and his coaching of legendary tennis sisters – Venus and Serena Williams.
  2. Richard Williams (Will Smith) and his wife Brandy (Aunjanue Ellis) are working day and night to coach their daughters Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) so that they could become Pros in tennis. After a long search for a coach, Paul Cohen (Tony Goldwyn) agrees to coach just Venus for free while Serena is coached by Brandy. After winning a few junior tournaments, Richard starts feeling that in this white dominated game, his daughters will not get the right chance, so he fires Paul. Richard then appoints Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal) as the sister’s coach and signs a decent agreement with him. But here also Richard doesn’t allow the girls to take part in the junior tournaments as he wants them to train now and complete their schooling. After 3 years without any major games, Rick requests Richard to allow 14-year-old Venus to play but he refuses. Venus decides to go against her father’s will and this leads to a fight between Richard and Brandy. Richard finally introspects his selfish feelings and allows Venus to participate in the Bank of the West tournament. Nike also comes with an offer for Venus but she refuses as she believes that her worth is more than that. Venus slowly passes through the tournament and is now set to play top-ranked Arantxa. Initially, Venus plays and breaks Arantxa but then Arantxa takes a long bathroom break which affects the game flow of Venus and she loses. But after the match, she receives a lot of appreciation and a USD 12 million offer from Reebok.
  3. The movie mostly focused on Richard Williams and Venus Williams and less on Serena. Serena, as far as I know, is a top player than Venus and therefore, her side should also have been equally highlighted, after all, it was a long movie.
  4. The movie reflects the pressure that some children have to go through to achieve stardom as well as fulfil their parent’s expectations. This pressure achieves great results in the future but also takes away the child from childhood.
  5. The 1980s were surely not any better for the black community and Williams did a revolutionary thing by getting into a mostly white sport. The same goes for Lewis Hamilton who not only entered but won 7 championships in a white-dominated car sport.
  6. It is a myth that parents are always right. After all, they are human beings and prone to make wrong decisions as you could see in the movie. Your opinions do matter when it is related to you. So speak up before it’s late.
  7. Don’t let violence be part of your revenge plans. Let your talent speak for you. There will be negative factors in the form of humans and situations that will try to bring your down, but it solely depends on you whether you fall or not.
  8. The acting by the cast was just mind-blowing and especially Will Smith who even won the Best Actor award at the Oscars. The tennis matches could have been more intense with the cinematography shots and with more screen time.
  9. A critically very much acclaimed movie that did not do that well at the box office.
  10. A must watch movie and I say it’s VERY GOOD.
