Badhaai Do – insaan hua hai!

  1. Badhaai Do is a 2022 Hindi movie directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni about the concept of Lavender Marriage.
  2.  Shardul (Rajkummar Rao), a police inspector and Sumi (Bhumi Pednekar), the PT teacher get into a lavender marriage by using the shield of a real Indian marriage. Shardul, a gay and Sumi, a lesbian fake this relationship to be with their lovers and to convince society. But the truth comes out ultimately, and slowly their family also approves the same. With this approval, they are also able to adopt a child.
  3.  Lavender marriage is a new concept for me, as are the many new terms that have originated in the 21st century, all thanks to their originator, the gen-z. With each year going by, new words get added to the Oxford dictionary though many don’t seem to make sense.
  4.  India, as a country, is still in the learning phase about the LGBTQIA+ community. There is also a majority of the orthodox population that is still in the non-acceptance phase and considers this to be not a gender but a disease.
  5.  The acting by the cast was good, but other than the lavender marriage concept, the movie did not throw any surprise element as such. You will surely have a few good laughs but no good music as such.
  6.  The other gender is still fighting for its rights in India and many parts of the world. The right to marriage, adopt a child and even the right to hold hands in public. I think art is one field where the community feels safe and supported as compared to other fields.
  7.  India is also full of weird traditions like the “maun vrat”, where the person who is an orthodox believer of his/her religion will not utter a word for a time period. This is done to please god so that the wishes are fulfilled on time.
  8.  No matter how much you try, you cannot change everyone. The female brigade had to fight for hundreds of years for their rights, and still, now, it is not fully accomplished. The other gender would take another two hundred years to be considered normal.
  9.  A critically acclaimed movie that did not do well at the box office.
  10.  A one-time watch, and I found it okay.
